Foot and Mouth Outbreak Reported

PARAGUAY - An outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) was reported to OIE by Dr Hugo Federico Idoyaga Benitez, Director General of SENACSA, San Lorenzo, Paraguay.

There has been 13 cases, of FMD reported to the OIE.

The outbreak was reported at San Pedro, Sargento Loma, on th 17 September 2011 and is un-resolved.

The outbreak only effects a defined zone within the country.

So far, the outbreak has resulted in 13 cases, with no deaths so far.

The source of the outbreak is unknown.

Control measures currently being applied include:

  • Quarantine
  • Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)
  • No vaccination
  • No treatment of affected animals

Control measures to be applied are:

  • Stamping out
  • Movement control inside the country
  • Screening
  • Zoning
  • Vaccination in response to the outbreak (s)
