Soothing teats, tough on bugs with new teat spray-dip

A UK-designed teat spray-dip with non-antibiotic anti-microbial properties was launched at the DairyTech event. To protect against the wear and tear of any number of milkings per day, Unique from EnviroSystems contains a human grade emollient used in nipple creams for breastfeeding mums.

Early adopter John Pidgeon at Court Place Farm near Honiton reports that his 110-cow herd's somatic cell count reduced from 180,000 to 120,000 cells/ml since its introduction, no other changes being made and at no extra cost. Used as a post-milking dip, he says teat end and skin condition are excellent.

The formulation is equally suited to robot milkers and three-times, twice or even once-a-day parlour systems, according to Sally Russell at EnviroSystems.

"Post-milking, there is no sticky residue that would attract soiling of teat ends," she explains. "It can also be used as a pre-milking cleanser. Environmentally, the formula is biodegradable, so spills and drips have zero impact on slurry or drainage water."

Triallist farmer Adam Chippendale with 200 cows in-milk at Wharton Hall Farm in south Cumbria has used the new product through robots for seven months. He reports cell counts are "the lowest they've ever been" and at lower cost than the previous teat spray. A 1,000 litre IBC connects straight into the robotic system's teat disinfection line.

In addition to teat ends in good condition, Sally Russell says healthy skin on the teat body plays an important part in a cow's natural defences against mastitis bugs. "Otherwise, cracked or chapped skin causes pain and agitation during milking, leading to manure splash, teat cups kicked off, and cows not milked out. Not only is damaged skin painful, it’s also always dirty.

"Of course, no spray-dip can compensate for poor milking routine, worn teat cup liners or overdue milking plant service. But with these eliminated, choice of teat spray-dip can play a significant part in good udder health."

This ready-to-use product is available in IBCs (1,000 litre) and 200 litre drums.
